What Counts as an Orthodontic Emergency?
Orthodontic emergencies are rare, but knowing what qualifies can ease anxiety and help you get the right care quickly. Contact our office immediately if you or your child experiences:
- Severe or sudden pain
- Injury to the mouth, jaw, or teeth
- Swelling, bleeding, or signs of infection
- Difficulty eating, speaking, or closing your mouth comfortably
Managing Minor Issues at Home
Most orthodontic discomforts can be temporarily managed at home until we can see you in the office. Here’s how to handle the most common ones:
Loose or Broken Brackets
Avoid wiggling or pulling a loose or broken bracket. If it’s still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with orthodontic wax to reduce irritation. If it falls off, you may discard it and contact us to set up a repair appointment.
Poking or Shifting Wires
Wires may move during treatment and begin irritating your cheek or gums. Try gently pushing the wire back into place with a clean pencil eraser. You can also cover the sharp end with orthodontic wax to protect your gums and cheeks.
Loose Spacers or Color Ties
Do not try to reposition or replace loose spacers or color ties yourself. If one shifts or comes out, contact us for instructions.
Soreness After Adjustments
Mild soreness is normal after an adjustment or when starting treatment. Eat soft foods, rinse with warm salt water, and consider over-the-counter pain relief (with parental approval, if for a child). Ice cream or frozen smoothies can also do wonders for comfort—and morale!
Lost or Broken Retainers / Aligners
If your aligner or retainer is lost or damaged, call us. We’ll help determine whether you need a replacement or can wait until your next scheduled visit. (Tip: always keep your previous Invisalign tray as a backup!)
Mouth Injury or Trauma
Injuries from sports or accidents should be taken seriously. Apply a cold compress and call us immediately. Depending on the severity, we may coordinate with your dentist or oral surgeon to ensure you receive comprehensive care.
