With extensive expertise in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, Dr. Nelson provides personalized treatment for children, teens, and adults. He is experienced in braces, Invisalign®, and other advanced orthodontic solutions, carefully designing treatment plans that improve oral health, bite function, and confident, lasting smiles for every patient.

As a lifelong Minnetonka resident and Hopkins High School graduate, Dr. Stephen Nelson is proud to care for the community he calls home. He welcomes patients at Lake Minnetonka Orthodontics’ Minnetonka, Wayzata, and Excelsior locations, helping families throughout the western Twin Cities achieve healthy, confident smiles with personalized orthodontic care.
Education, Training, and Professional Attributes
After earning his Bachelor of Arts degree and graduating Magna Cum Laude from Gustavus Adolphus College, Dr. Nelson went on to achieve his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Minnesota, graduating first in his class. He continued his education at the University of Minnesota, completing his specialty training in orthodontics and earning a Master of Science degree.
Dr. Nelson was a valued member of the Cleft Lip and Palate Team at the Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis for over 25 years. He is board-certified by the American Board of Orthodontics and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. He is also a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the American Dental Association, and the Minnesota Dental Association.

When he’s not creating beautiful smiles, Dr. Nelson enjoys spending quality time with his family. He and his wife, Jennifer, live on a hobby farm in Long Lake and are proud parents of two grown children. Outside the office, he loves cooking, fishing, exploring new destinations through travel, and relaxing at the cabin.
